I know I usually showcase bands primarily from South Florida, but there's one local band from Pensacola that I just had to share with you all. Their name is ISLE, and once I hit play on their song Bayview, I felt like I was whisked away to a tiny oceanside cabin to dream sweet synthy-pop dreams. I sat down and spoke to the band about how they met and their upcoming show dates.

Introduce yourselves to us!

Hey, my name is Mikey. I sing and play guitar, synth, and bass for a band called ‘ISLE’. The other members of the band are Tobi Echevarria, who plays bass, guitars and synths, and Brandon Warren who kicks the beats.

Are you originally from Florida?

Yeah, We are loosely based in Pensacola, Florida. We all grew up and are very much rooted there. Currently I am living in Gainesville and another member that plays in our live band, Tyler Walker, lives in Nashville. So right now it’s pretty tough to get us all together, but Pensacola is definitely home and our music is very much a part of that.

Briefly explain the musicians/musical inspiration behind Isle?

The musical inspiration tends to come from a lot of different things. I think overall the thing that seems to inspire me the most is the openness of Pensacola, and the really beautiful water-scapes lying around, I try and keep those things at mind whenever we are writing our songs and I think our album reflects that.

The lack of time we have now that I live in Gainesville gets me in the groove of writing and creating also. Whenever we get together now, we know that we don’t have much time to work on things so we work off of really simple structured melodies that feel really natural, which tends to make for some honest, interesting tunes.

If you had to define your “sound” how would you describe it?

I would say our music is a mixture of Kraut/Shoegaze but still having pretty poppy elements to it. So I would say if you take those elements and drop them into a body of salt water on a hot summer day, you could maybe hear whispers of our sound.

We all kind of come from different era’s musically, there are pretty big age gap’s between all of us, so it’s really fun and interesting to hear what we come up with because Brandon comes from a jazz background, Tobi comes from a psych-kraut rock background and I grew up listening to a lot of post rock, then segued into making electronic music later in life so I have this electronic kind of background.

Turns out to be a really funny sounding mix at times, but I love playing with these guys!

Are you guys classically trained? If not, tell me about the self-taught process?

Brandon is the only one who is trained, he went to school for jazz drumming but as far as Tobi and I, we are both self taught. For my instance, I started playing guitar when I was about 9 because my older brother got a guitar and being the little brother I wanted to do what he was doing. Since then I started picking up other instruments and trying to imitate what my favorite musicians were doing on those instruments and that’s pretty much how it all happened.

Could you tell us about any upcoming events Isle may be hosting/attending/throwing? Any in Miami/Ft.Lauderdale?

We currently don’t have any shows planned at the moment, we have been working hard at finishing our first record, which is coming to a close as we speak.

The album should be out sometime around late summer/early fall, we plan on doing a few weeks in support of the album so Im sure we will be down in the south Florida area around then!

How can readers contact or learn more about you?

As of right now, we only have one single out titled “Bayview” which we put out on Bad Panda records. To keep up with future releases tune into our facebook page!

If you're in the local music scene in Miami, Fl then I'm sure you've already heard of these guys, if not, then it's my pleasure to introduce you all to Mercury Wolff!

I took some time to do a quick interview with the band and find out what inspires their music and what makes them tick! Take a look at the interview below!

Me: Introduce yourselves!

Hey! Our band is called Mercury Wolff. Who makes up the band? Mercury Wolff is on lead voice, keys, synth. We have Apollo from Mars on lead guitar and drum machine. There's Jupiter on drums and percussion and we have Pluto Lee on acoustic bass.

Mercury Wolff is a no-nonsense modern day goddess who is here to declare greatness for all. She’s a do-gooder with a mean bite.

As a collective though there is a team that helps put Mercury Wolff together, we shall be presenting our capabilities in late February; which include, costume, make-up/hair, cuisine, management, audio engineers, film crew, set designers, dancers and of course the band members who helped develop Mercury well before the fun stuff started to happen.

Are you originally from Miami? If not, where are you from?

Mercury: Yes. Although I could’ve sworn I was from NY, it just never made any sense to me that I was born in Miami, I still question it to this day.

Briefly explain the musicians/musical inspiration behind Mercury Wolff?

Being introduced to the world in the 80s and growing up in the 90s, by the time it was 2000, my musical influences were pretty ingrained, although I had not known it until much later.

Madonna’s concerts impressed me more than anything else in terms of how a pop star should put on a show, or anyone for that matter. I also love her whole, having a message and needing it to be heard conviction when she entered the spotlight back in ’84, I personally relate to that. I’ve got a message and it needs to be heard.

If you had to define your “sound” how would you describe it?

“Transcendental Pop”. Musically it sounds like Led Zeppelin and Madonna raised Mercury Wolff. Mercury’s voice lends on 80s pop themes and 90s RnB vocal principles, where does the Zepp come into play? When Mercury’s voice combines with the other members of the band.

Are the member(s) of Mercury Wolff classically trained? If not, tell me about the self-taught process?

Jupiter is a classicaly trained Jazz bassist and gets to explode as a self-taught drummer and music producer.
Mars is both trained and self-taught, mostly intuition drives him. He is Apollo, after-all.
Pluto was taught by Frankie Midnight and self-taught. He also plays the mandolin and the occasional cowbell.
Mercury began her piano lessons at seven years and continued till fifteen before choosing to teach herself the rest. She taught her own voice to expand by singing along to Alicia Keys, Fiona Apple, PJ Harvey, Bjork and Mariah Carey.

Could you tell us about any upcoming events Mercury Wolff may be hosting/attending/throwing?

Sure! Here are a couple coming up!

February 22, The Stage Miami – Florida Best New Artist – Mercury Wolff shall be performing
February 23, {Barrio} Workshop – Tim Burton Revisited – Mercury Wolff shall be dressed up as Mrs Lovett and the band shall present a medley of songs in which Tim Burton has made famous, in full costume!

If you've never heard of Hialeah fest, get ready to have your mind blown (not a hyperbole). This year they'll be hosting a mind boggling 50 bands, all taking the stage for a mere 15 minutes, which will force them to play hard, fast and give us the best they've got.

The Jam Garden sat down with one of the festivals coordinators, Jota Dazza (also from the band Radioboxer) to tell us what's going down this year.

What is Hialeah Fest?

Hialeah Fest is that special time of the year when Ferny Coipel and Tony Landa work their magic and select a bunch of bands to pay homage to the city of progress. Every band has 15 minutes to show their best and the venue gets so packed of people and energy that at times it seems it’s going to explode. It is also the longest running festival in South Florida. Maybe.

The event will be Oct 19 and 20 at Churchill’s Pub, it has always been there. Why? Because they said so. Enough said. (That last part is actually on the confirmation email they sent about the Festival).

Describe who Ferny Coipel is to you?

I could go on and on about this man and so could everybody that knows him. But I won’t because he wouldn’t want to read it. He would say something like “shut up man. You’re so stupid”. But I will say that if there wasn’t a Ferny there would not be a Radioboxer.

Describe who Ferny Coipel is to Hialeah?

He is one of the greatest sons of the city of progress. Spectacularly weird and amazing just like the city that raised him.

Why do you think he has his own day in Hialeah, honoring him?

To be more accurate, Ferny clarified it wasn’t Ferny’s day but Humbert’s Day. And I think they have always wear the Hialeah tag with honor and pride no matter what and by the universal laws of reciprocation the city was happy to wear the Humbert tag as well.

What bands will be playing at this event?

50 bands!! And all of them AMAZING.

Humbert, Nil Lara, The Brand, Radioboxer, Electric Piquete, Black Jacket, Nag Champayons present Hialeah Selassie, Hamerhed, Dyslexic Postcards, Jellyfish Brothers, Lavola, The Holstered, The Bellringers
Stop the Presses, Haochi Waves, Medina, JSF, Agro, The Kut, Kuartizar ,The Vilifiers, The Bum Hips
Ricky Valido and the Hialeah Hillbillies, The Deadly Blank, Phineas J Whoopie, Change Is Great, Soundcircles, Ari, Mind You, In Habit, By Default, Sophie Sputnik, Brand Name Punk, Nekromaniak, Anderson Council, Riot Agents, Perro Negro, Rick Moon, The Melograv Devices, Beyond the Boundary, Critics & Skeptics, Das Phobia
plus comedian Monte Benjamin

In your opinion, why should people outside the area of Hialeah want to come to this event?

In my opinion if you have not seen Humbert live you are missing out and you don’t even know.. and I kind of pity you, but you should take advantage and see them ASAP. But even without the Humbert there are just so many bands! And they only got 15 minutes!! It’s like getting all kinds of delicious muffins and only having to eat the tops, or watching amazing movies without having to sit through the boring parts. I know my band will bring the best and I’m sure other bands will do the same; we will try to make the evening special. If you have a chance to watch Humbert, Radioboxer, Lavola, Stop The Presses, The Deadly Blank, The Vilifiers Electric Piquete, SoundCircles, Rick Moon, Ari , Nil Lara, the Brand and many others in ONE place why would you not take it?!?! Seriously what’s wrong with you?

Be sure to check out the event tomorrow! Oct 19 and 20 at Churchill's Pub!

By now you've heard the name, listened to the music and know his story. Local electronic music producer Steve Vaynshtok, who goes by his musical moniker Abdecaf, has just released his new EP, titled 'Rebuild' through Flourescent Records.

Vaynshtok had this to say about his new release, "[My first EP] Unravel was me trying to find myself, and Rebuild is definitely gonna be more of that. Music is what feelings sound like to me. All my songs are just my emotions in wave form. When I create a song it has to be deep, it has to tell a story. Even without vocals a song has to be complete."

The tracks on Rebuild are a stark mix between energetic sythns with prickly drum kicks and smooth nighthouse dreamscapes.

Our favorite tracks? Never Know ft. Soft Lightning, Sight Unseen (because it sounds like a Mario Bros. game on speed), and You are a Pioneer ft. Koda Final.

Take a listen to it all below:

There's few bands in South Florida that can draw in the 'under 18' crowds like Antics. With a click of the mouse they can fill a venue to breaking point.

We got to talk to the guys about what inspires their music and got them to describe how they view each others role in the band. While their answers were short and sweet, their meaning speaks volumes.

Introduce yourselves and tell us which instrument you play!

Kris Alvarez - Guitar/Vocals
Gabriel Valdes - Bass/Vocals
Sebastian Hidalgo - Guitar/Synth/Vocals
Javi Cuarezma - Drums

If you had to briefly describe the personality of each member of the band, how would you describe each person?

Kris is the outgoing spirit of the band, he sets up the shows and takes care of the design project.
Gabriel is the laid back one, what we refer to as 'bassist syndrome'
Sebastian is the "electrical wizard."
Javi is a visual artist.

Were you all born and raised in South Florida? If not, where did you grow up?

Yes, we were all born and raised in South Florida.

Tell me the story of how you all met.

Javi, Kris, and Gabriel were in a band called “Big Brat” but Big Brat disbanded. Gabriel and Kris continued to write music together and eventually picked up Sebastian. They formed what we know today as “Antics” and after a couple of months of writing music together and performing an EP release show they picked up Javi once again.

Where each of you interested in the creative arts and music from a young age?

Yes, we were all involved in music classes in grade school. Gabriel and Javi were even in marching band in Braddock Senior High School. We were all music majors when we attended Miami Dade College.

Were/Are your parents supportive of your musical endeavors?

Our parents have been extremely supportive since day one.

Which bands/musicians influence your bands sound?

Radiohead, Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, Arcade Fire, The Walkmen, Kit Fisto, Coldplay, The Flaming Lips.

How do you feel your sound has changed from when you met to now?

Currently we’re making a move toward our original idea for our sound, after having deviated on our last EP.

What inspires the lyrics for you songs?

Life experience.

If you had to describe your bands sound in 3 words what words would you choose?

Ambient, driving, and dynamic.

What do you each of you do outside of the band?

Sebastian records other bands and gives guitar lessons, Javi gives drum lessons, photographs, and draws, Gabriel has a job at Miami Dade College, and Kris does graphic design and writes music.

What other creative outlets do you have outside of music making?

Javi draws and photographs, Sebastian paints and sequences music, Gabriel sequences music, and Kris writes music.

What are some of your favorite local bands?

Kit Fisto, Van Gogh Sky, Astronaut, People, Wilkes Oswald, Palette Town, Shagrin.

What shows do you have coming up?

October 20th at The Talent Farm.

What does music making mean to each of you?

Music is a creative and emotional outlet for all four of us.

The first thing you notice when sitting down to meet to Phillip Roffman of Subculture, is the exuberant amount of energy this guy has. And it's no wonder since we meet at his favorite coffee house in Ft. Lauderdale, Urban Brew.

He has a huge smile on his face and jumps right into talking about why he loves this city --the iced coffee in his hand sloshing around as he gesticulates-- and explains how in a few short weeks he'll be making this city his permanent home.

For this Boca Raton resident, Fort Lauderdale is ripe with opportunity. Phil sees the chance to create something that's hard to come by in South Florida, a thriving music scene infused with community engagement, and as CEO of Subculture, he has a few other ideas in the works.

Take a listen to the audio interview below and get to know the man behind Subculture.

Subculture's most significant event was Record Store Day 2012 at Radio Active Records. Here's what Phiil recounts from that event:

"Mike Ramirez and I talked the day before, and we shook hands and were excited about the next day. That night I heard a loud 'Boom!' It starts to pour with the loudest lighting I've ever heard and it lasted from 12 midnight to about 6 am.

I thought, 'why is this happening,' and my dad told me, 'success isn't about how you deal with success, it's about how you deal with failure, which is inevitable.' I thought thanks for nothing Dad, then moments later I realized he was right, "whatever happens happens, there's no reason to get emotional. And the next morning I woke up and was ready to go. 6am rolls by and it's still storming, then 7am hits and the rain stops. The sky clears, and I exhale, and after that it was like everything fell into place. By the end of the day, I was soaked through from rain and sweat. We packed up after a crazy successful day and I went to bed that night with a smile on my face."

Subculture's next event, Sincerely Yours, Marty McFly, will be on July 14th at The Classic Gateway Theatre, 1820 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304. Tickets are $10. There'll be art showcases, DJs and an Indie Craft Bazaar. So why the heck are you still sitting here! Get a ticket before they're all gone!

ANR will be opening for St. Vincent tonight at The Stage! You still have time to make it if you hurry. It's a show you won't want to miss. If you miss their performance, fear not, ANR told us they're in the final stages of releasing their new album, which is due out this Winter. MJ says, "the words 'death', 'dead', and astral projection all play a role in the inspiration for this album."

Check out some of ANR's song's below.
