Local Eats: SpecialTea Lounge

Photo by Anaïs Alexandre. SpecialTea's Enormous Menu.Chances are if you attend FIU's Modesto Maidique Campus, you knew about SpecialTea Lounge years ago. For those outside the campus' 5 mile radius, I'd like to introduce you to SpecialTea.

It's Miami's only tea lounge. It's small, has muted olive colored walls, and soft white drapes hanging from their high ceilings. Mounted on the menu wall are canisters full of imported teas from all over the world.

Owners Chris and Marilyn say they created SpecialTea when they visited cozy coffee houses in other states. They wanted to create something unique back home, so they created a tea lounge.

SpecialTea has their own bakery section full of handmade treats.Their banquettes and tables are usually filled with laughing students, relaxing during their time away from class. SpecialTea is clearly their haven. And one by one they all get up to order, with owner Chris greeting them each by name. It seems like everyone in the place are old friends.

A Must Try!

To my left a sign describes the "Dancing Gypsy," a $9 special they offer with fajita steak, homemade garlic hummus, fire roasted sweet peppers, and some creamy/tangy goat cheese crumbles.

To wash it all down, I order the Mango Matcha ($5.20) which is a thick, frozen tea smoothie made from mango, papaya, pear, Rooibos tea, and sweetned matcha (or green tea).

This is the perfect place to meet up with friends for a unique lunch. SpecialTea Lounge is located at 10766 SW 24th Street, and is open Tue-Fri 10am-8pm, and Sat 3pm-11pm.
